Questions

Q:  How do I register?
A: Go to sportkc.org and follow instruction.

Q: Will the course be well marked?
A: Yes, we will have markers at each location you change direction. But do remember, that as an athlete doing the race, you need to familiarize yourself with the course. Be sure to check out the maps on our site.

Q: Do volunteers remain on the course till everyone is done? How do you know if someone is still out there?
A: We have a 'sweep'--someone that travels the course to be sure nobody is left out there in need of maintenance, medical attention, or a little encouragement.

Q: How spectator friendly is your race? I have an elderly family member that wants to see me race, but is concerned about a place to sit and be out of the heat.
A: For only $75.00 you can get a spot plus 3 additional spots at the Triathlete Experience Tent. This will allow your family member a cool place with restroom facilities, volunteers, and cool drinks--plus, it's a premium view for them to spectate. In addition, you will receive a VIP parking pass and also have access to the restroom and added food and beverages.

Q: I realize to the seasoned athlete the finisher's medal is not a big deal. But this is my first race and I'm wondering if you have something for everyone that finishes. I have friends that have done other local races where they cross the finish and all they get is a bottle of water... if they're lucky.
A: Everyone that finishes the Kansas City Triathlon will receive a custom medal. Whether it is your first or one-hundred-first race--we believe you should receive something for your effort and support of the race.

Q: I'm new to the sport. Is there anyone I can get in touch with to answer some questions--this is my very first race and I'm pretty nervous.
A: Good news. Our entire board is made up of triathletes who have done more races than we can count. We would be happy to put you in touch with one of them for a little help--see the list on our site and feel free to email any of them.

Q: What if I registered but cannot compete?
A: We are very aware that sometimes life gets in the way and that it’s common for an athlete to become injured, however we must maintain a no refund policy.

Q: I travel quite a bit and it’s hard to get there to pick up my race packet. Is it ok if my wife picks it up for me?
A: No. We provide multiple opportunities for you to pick up your packet prior to the race. Aside from giving you the chance to meet some of the race staff and ask any last minute questions, you need to be present to show your I.D. and your USAT card. There are no exceptions– so please do not ask… no matter how creative your reason… the answer will still be ‘no’.

Q: I know this sounds weird, but I have a lucky swim cap. Can I wear it rather than wear the race-issued swim cap?
A: Sorry, you must wear the designated race swim cap or you will not be able to race. The caps will be color coded by heat allowing one more level of safety to be sure who is still in the water.

Q: Do I have to wear a bike helmet?
A: This is not up for discussion. YES! And the helmet must be (certified) and secure before you leave the transition area and mount your bike or you will be pulled from the course and disqualified. This is for your safety and is a USAT rule. NOTE: USAT rules state that prior to, and following the race, if you are on your bike (even riding to your car) you must be wearing your helmet.

Q: Are race briefings mandatory?
A: Race day is an exciting and hectic day, especially if you are a first timer. We strongly suggest you attend the briefing so you can get the scoop on how the “waves” work at the swim start – plus other very important rules that must be followed. It’s about safety and it’s about you having a great race!

Q: How do I know if I can use a wetsuit?
A: The water temperature will be taken the morning of the race. If the water temperature is 72° or lower, wetsuits will be allowed. Announcements will be made early enough to provide ample time to prepare. Some triathletes bring their wetsuit no matter what–you never know how things will be on race day and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Q: Will I have a chance to swim the course early that morning?
A: We will have an area designated for warm up swims, however the course will be closed till race start.

Q: Will there be a bike mechanic on site?
A: Yes, but it is highly recommended that your bike be serviced with time for you to take it for a test ride BEFORE race day. Onsite assistance is typically reserved for emergencies. NOTE: There will not be mechanical aid on the course.

Q: When should I get there?
A: The race begins at 7:30 a.m . Experienced athletes arrive at 5:30 a.m., they know it takes time to get marked, organized and stand in the porta-john lines!  Cutting it close will only add to your stress!

Q: I need to leave by a certain time and the race may not be over yet. Can I get my bike out of transition?
A: For safety and security reasons we will not allow bikes to leave transition till all the bikes are off the bike course and all athletes are on the run course. Guessing the actual time would be very difficult; the call is made on race day.
